This is our first in a series of workshops. We plan to post a new workshop each month, so you may want to bookmark this site. If you have an idea for a workshop, submit it to us and we'll pay you $25 if we use it. (We're BIG spenders!)

Your "mission" is to properly cover the wedding ceremony. Review the information below, then sketch out the way you would deploy your manpower and equipment on paper. When you've finished, click the "Solution" button to see, #1 the way we covered this ceremony and #2, the way we should have covered this ceremony. If you come up with a better solution, please post it in our forums, for discussion.

Position cameras & gear for best coverage
Position cameras & gear for best coverage
This is from yesterday's wedding (June 23, 2007). It is a beautiful, old, Catholic church and we were handed a list of rules, the most pertinent were -
  • Cameras (with or without operators) may only be in the blue shaded areas.
  • No movement of videographers is allowed.

This is the list of people/things you must cover (other than the usual) -

  • The music from the pipe organ
  • Lady doing a reading before song
  • Vocalist (balcony)
  • Man doing a reading after song
  • Couple will move from altar area (c) to area (d), then return (blue lines)

Notes -

Heavy line left side of (d) area is a wall.
(a) & (b) are podiums, (c) is altar.
Shaded boxes near (a) & (b) are pillars.
"pipes" are the pipes of the organ.
Unity candles are 6' behind podium (a) at (e)

You have two operators, yourself and your assistant.

Below is a list of your gear -

  • Sony VX2100 (2)
  • Sony FX1 (1)
  • Panasonic AGD-VC7 (1)
  • Old hi-8 camcorder with gd audio & mic input
  • Marantz 660 digital recorder (1)
  • Shotgun mics (2)
  • Shure handheld mics (xlr) (3)
  • Wireless sets (4)
  • handheld wireless mics (2)
  • Beachtek adapters (3)
  • mic stands (4)

You have tripods, headphones, wide-angle and tele lenses, etc., for all cameras, but these are condisered incidentals and not a part of this problem-solving workshop.

This is the information you've gathered at the rehearsal -

  • the church coordinator assures you that both speakers (readers) will use podium (a).
  • the priest agrees to wear a wireless mic
  • father of the bride will not be saying anything.
  • the organist says that different sounds come from each side of the pipe groups
  • organist, priest and coordinator say that although their sound-guy won't be here until tomorrow, it will be alright to tap into their sound system to catch the priest, readers and vocalist.

SUMMARY -

OK, you now have all the information we had when we arrived at the church, only an hour and fifteen minutes before the ceremony begins (because the church was locked until that time). Sketch out the way you would cover this, then click the "Solution" button below to see two "solutions" - the way we actually covered it and the way we feel we should have covered it.
