Author Topic: Wedding Video Critique  (Read 2590 times)
Guest
« on: May 22, 2007, 12:25:14 PM »

I just reviewed and judged another wedding video that had just about all the problems we commonly see in submitted wedding videos.  Sometimes the problems are sufficient in seriousness or quantity to prevent us from certifying the videographer and sometimes they are not - but there is no doubt these are common problems.

Please read the critique at -
http://www.weddingvideodoneright.com/articles.php?p=critique-118

Then return here and post your comments.  Do your wedding videos have these flaws?  Do you think my critique is flawed?  Whatever your opinion, please share it with us and others.

Thought that along with that critique, you might like to see the scoring system we came up with..

Believe it or not, our judges generally come within ten points of each other, using this sytem!

What are YOUR thoughts?  What'd we forget or leave out?  What did we include that shouldn't be here?  Etc.

In order for me to agree or disagree with your critique I'd have to see the wedding video, wouldn't I?

We didn't get permission to show this to others.

But you can get a lot out of just reading the critique.

Thought we'd even things out by posting a critique of a video that did pass.  We chose one that wasn't great, so the critique would be more interesting, but it easily passed.  The score sheet is there too.

Also, we have permission to send a copy of this video, should anyone want to use it to checkout our scoring system.  Just pay the $5 cost ( www.weddingvideodoneright.com/payment/ ) and reference "Critique #129".

I thought the review was helpful, even without seeing the video.  It sounds like the person in question was a skilled videographer and a very poor editor.

Your critique was a good reminder that both aspects of wedding video are vitally important.

Excellent point, Josh!

A good editor can often make a good video out of poor camerawork but a bad editor can't make a good video even out of great camerawork.

Now, you want to hear "the rest of the story"?  Our judges nearly fell out of their chairs when, after they scored the video, we told them that this person sent this video - not just for certification - but because he wanted to solicit wedding videographers to use his editing services!

The fellow actually believes he is a good video editor.  But before you laugh that off - consider this:  didn't YOU think your first couple of wedding videos were pretty good?  (Until a year or so had passed!) Trouble is, this guy had been in the business well over a decade and still didn't have a clue.

I think we ALL have a hard time viewing our own work with a clear eye.  That's another reason that receiving written critiques from our judges (whether you pass or not) is a great value.  I know I tended to be a little defensive at first, but then I studied the critiques further and got some great insight into my own work.
