The statement in a previous post that WEVA members may be using predatory contracts to squeeze money out of clients is misleading and unfair to WEVA members as a whole. Most WEVA members are dedicated videographers who treat their customers fairly, and a poorly-worded article by one member should not be considered an example of what WEVA represents.

The important thing for clients is to ask what is and isn't included in their contract price, and if there are any questions about that be sure to clarify it up front.

I can deduce from Mr. Shaw's posts here and in many other wedding videographer forums, that Mr. Shaw takes the wedding video business very seriously and is a decent person.  But I must take exception to his post seeming to excuse the article in question (see) -

http://www.weddingvideodoneright.com/articles.php?p=sell_it_in_post

To excuse it (the event DV magazine article) by calling it "a poorly worded article" is misleading.  This was a series of two articles and they ran several months ago, giving the author and publisher plenty of time to clear up any accidental misconceptions, yet I am aware of no such efforts.

It would be unfair to make blanket statements about all WEVA members, but I think it is fair to say that I am certainly not the first person to point out that WEVA seems to advocate profit for its members at the often times seemingly unfair cost of their clients.

I will agree that most WEVA members joined to show support for their industry and to advance their knowledge so they can better serve their clients.  I do question whether WEVA is fullfilling that role adequately.

For instance, just take a look at their "news" section.  It appears to me to be nothing more than self-serving promotional blurbs.  Our news section,
http://www.WeddingVideoDoneRight.com/news.php
while growing and needing more sources (we're working on that) is at least honest-to-goodness news without self-promotion.

I can't explain why the author of that article hasn't done more to clear up any possible misconceptions, but I'm confident from the research I've done about this that he is being misinterpreted on these forums. I've encouraged you to contact Mike Nelson directly to ask him in person about this, which would be the decent thing to do given the controversy you're generating on the topic. Expecting him to come here of his own accord to comment isn't quite fair: as the author of your own article you could make the first move.

As for whether WEVA promotes profit at an unfair cost to customers, I see no viable justification for that. Part of what WEVA does promote is charging a fair price for the amount of work done and not giving away one's services below their real value, something many fledgling videographers do. Mike Nelson may push this concept beyond a point most of us find comfortable, but I've heard from someone who knows him personally that he does this in a way which is not a problem for his customers. I haven't heard directly from Mike himself, but his office is just a phone call away...

P.S.  I'd say that most wedding videographers are underpaid for the amount of time and effort they put in, so let's not rush to judgment on the ones who have found ways to earn a decent living.

I'm tired of hearing about this stuff!  Nobody's been talking about this for two weeks until this [new] topic.

Anyone who read the two Event dv articles knows that they are talking about screwing the brides for more money.  The guy who wrote them is a big weva guy - one of the honchos.

All this garbage about being misunderstood is just that, GARBAGE!

Why doesn't everyone just read the articles, then shut up?
