Alright,

Post your wedding effects here. Please use a title: description format.

Great Wedding Video Effects:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Partial Freeze Frame: The subject freezes, whilst the remaining objects in the frame keep moving.  Can be too subtle sometimes: some people don't notice the effect until it's gone! This would be accomplished by extracting a part of the frame, and overlaying it on the original footage. This effect has a limited length because if the subject is moving the subject will get out of bounds of it's extracted counterpart. (This was submitted by: mooblie)

Slow-Fast-Slow: This works best with a Glidecam shot. Take a clip of a smooth Glidecam shot and split it into 3 sections. Slow the first and third clips to 50% and speed the second to 300-500% (spread the clips out first so they don't overlap and "clip" the others). I use this alot.

The appearing / disappearing bride!: Set your camera up on stage facing down the center aisle. It doesn't have to be a boring straight shot, you can angle the camera or whatnot, but it has to be mounted on a good steady tripod.

Get a good lengthy shot down the aisle with nobody in your shot. Once you have about 30 seconds to a minute of this (just to be sure you've got enough) have the bride walk down the aisle.

Now, mix the two clips together so that it appears that the aisle is empty, but then the bride appears, walking down the aisle. she disappears again, and once again reappears. You can do this three or four times.

Contagious De-saturation
: Another one I like to do is to have the bride hold her bouquet while the groom holds onto her. Have them do this, looking at each other deeply for a few seconds, and then have them kiss. In post, take the clip into after effects (or your choice of special effects software) and make a couple identical layers using that clip. On the top layer, we're going to do a roto (mask) around the bouquet, so it's the only thing visible on the top layer.
Now, desaturate the layer beneath, and all of a sudden, everything is black and white, except the bouquet. When they kiss bleed the color back into the lower layer, and you've got a neat looking little clip.

If you don't have after effects, Premiere Pro does have a 16 point garbage matte that can be used for this, but it's actually easier to pull off in AE. That last effect is also a handy, fairly simple one to learn the basics of rotoscoping with. It's a time-consuming process, but if you pick it up, you can do some amazing stuff with it. If you watched "On the Lot" on Fox, one of the contestants, used a lot of rotoscoping in his videos, and every time he did, you'd hear the crowd "ooh" and "ah". Do it well, and your bride will do the same!

Here's a shot that I've done before with great looking results:

Set your camera up on stage facing down the center aisle.

It sounds weird, but it looks awesome. I actually picked that shot up watching an episode of CSI.

Another one I like to do is to have the bride hold her bouquet while the groom holds onto her. Have them do this, looking at each other deeply for a few seconds, and then have them kiss. In post, take the clip into after effects (or your choice of special effects software) and make a couple identical layers using that clip. The rotoscoping effect is very cool. Just tried it real quick in Sony Vegas pretty easy effect as long as the flowers dont move much.

Thanks for the great ideas.

Yeah!  Another Vegas user!  Here I thought I was the only one!  Matfam, can you give me detail how you did that in Vegas.  I'm kinda new to some of this more "artsy-fartsy" special effects stuff.  I know that my software does a heck of a lot more that I am using!

1. Open the file your want to edit.
2. Split the clip where you want you effect to take place
3. Left click the section you just split, hold "Ctrl" and drag it to the track above the current one
4. click on the event pan/crop button
5. In the lower left corner there is a "mask" check box click it
6. usint the pen tool trace around the flowers this will mask out everything else
7. click on the next track down and set the saturation points using keyframing and the effects menu.

It sounds complex, its really easy.

Thanks to Jordan for getting us started on this!  Now, let's expand a bit.  We'll initially get all the ideas together through these posts and submitted emails (to admin at this site).  When we have a good number, I'll setup two sections in the main site area - one with "Effects:  Shots"  and one "Effects: Editing".

Each effect will be listed with a thumbnail summary and a link to take you to a detailed "How to" page.  Each will also credit the person who first submitted the effect.

The person with the most number of submissions by the end of November will get....what?  What should we offer as a prize?  Let's hear some (hopefully reasonable) suggestions.    Maybe a WeddingVideoDoneRight t-shirt?  It would probably take a large shirt to fit all that on it!
