Hey Guys,
Sorry this is about 2 weeks late, but I had this silly golf tournament I had to work at all week 2 weeks ago, and last week was catch up editing time so,

4/5...
It is strange this year but just about every saturday so far has been raining or threathening to rain. This one was no exception. I snuck some shots of the exterior when it slowed down a bit, but this was almost entirely inside. Let me say first of all that this wedding was my first real test of low-light capability in my A1s This church was DARK. I had to shoot the processional at 12db of gain 1/30 of a second and still it was dark. I have found that these cameras at that light level really reflect more of what the eye sees than I saw in SD. These shots are dark but the detail and color are maintained. There is grain, but you just kindof expect grain in that kind of darkness.

Anyway, I think the darkness is acceptable becuase the freaking church was dark right? Anyway the canon HV20 did not fare so well. Where there was light on the altar there was an image but beyond the altar there was NO image at all.

This is interesting to note, and something to keep in mind whenever it is really dark. I consider that all I need is 2 shots to make it work, and I had those. Nice wide shot from the other A1 btw also from the balcony, but nicely exposed because of the 1.6 at the wide end.

Both are at 12db and the grain is not very bad. Keep in mind that the moving shots fare better than the frame grabs, but the wife & I agree that the images are acceptable.
I pulled audio from the board to my Zoom H2 and it is fantastic! The issue I brought up in the beginning about there being too many buttons and switches on the A1 holds true once again because I had the Mic Attenuator flipped(bringing the audio levels down to compensate for very loud audio) and forgot to flip it back, so my A camera audio is almost non existant. The B cam got the wireless, and the Rode NTG-2 worked extremely well for ambient audio. The HV20 Audio is next to worthless. VERY noisy and thin, just aweful. Reception was at a dark conference center. I shot this one with 1 cam and on camera audio. The one major concern I have is that Mic Att switch that was on during the intros, and getting their introduction, but I have face higher hurdles than that, so we'll see. I used my canon VL10i light and it was very adequate. The reception was over at 10:30 and I went home, packed up and went down to the Masters and installed computers all night, so I am just getting to the editing now. I am through the dark processional and may update this post as things progress.

Yeah, that processional is DARK!

I'm wondering if it might pay to use both VX2100s (or PD170) AND the HDV cams.  Using the SDs in the low light shots and the HDVs for the rest.

It'd be a pain to have to handle the extra cams, but I think it would pay off.  Wouldn't it be better to have properly exposed SD video of the processional, mixed with the rest of the ceremony in HD?

Of course the Sony SDs have even less resolution in 16:9 than in 4:3, but even so..

That last shot - at the alter, look beautiful.

Afterthought -

This is one of the reasons we go to rehearsals.  I don't know if you went to this rehearsal or not but..

We always ask them to set the lights the way they will be at the ceremony.  Then, if we notice any issues (and we nearly always do), we discuss them and possible solutions with the bride, coordinator, lighting guy, etc.

At least this way, if something isn't going to work well, all are forewarned.

Thanks for sharing this, Bill.  But now I'm scared to death of getting that first HD wedding assignment!   Cheesy

Hank
2 things to keep in mind here.
#1 The moving footage looks considerably better than the still frames. http://www.grantphotovideo.com/processional.wmv
#2 the Vx2100s woudl've had a similar issue in this room. It would have been a little brighter but not awesome vs. dark you know?

Sometimes it just is what it is. I actually did go to the rehearsal. I did speak to the director, the lighting guy, etc. This is how the bride wanted the church, and it wasn't up to me to change it. It was dark at the rehearsal, and it was darker on the day of the wedidng because of the rain. But, fear not Hank. It really isn't as bad as it seems. I believe I am coming out with much more useable footage than with my Sonys. They are sold anyway, so no going back now. speaking of the first HD wedding I just got this e-mail from our 3/29 groom...
"Bill,

Will there be an additional charge for the entire raw footage?  When will be able to order a copy of the edited version in HD and how much?

Thanks,
Chris"

Bill,

Please don't misunderstand me - by going to rehearsal, etc., you've done all you can do.  And the footage with some light looks awesome.  On top of all that, I've seen your work and I know you're good.

Yeah, I guess I do feel that the VX2100 would have done a better job in those dark areas.  And I know that most of us would rather have three hd cams than two hd and two sd.  But I've been thinking of holding onto my sd cams for this very reason, and your post hasn't done anything to put a dent into that thinking!  Smiley

Hank,
Just wanted to let you know, I burned the DVD today, and looks alot better on the screen than in the preview. Very minimal noise, and considerably brighter. I guess the SD downcoversion smoothed it out. Very interesting.

Bill -

Although CS3 has helped me do a lot better with my web videos, some shots just tend to look darker on the web.  Not sure if it has to do with some monitor settings or something that happens in the encoding.

Anyway, glad to hear that your dark shots are still good and usable.  And thanks for posting the most interesting "Last week's Shoot" we've had in a long while!
